Overview

ABNMS 2015 will be held in Melbourne, Australia from the 23-26th November. Modelling tutorials will be held on the 23-24th November, followed by the ABNMS Conference on the 25-26th November, both at Monash University, Caulfield.

You will be able to register for the tutorials and the conference separately or together.

Keynote Speakers

The conference organisers are pleased to announce that Dr Bruce Marcot of the US Forest Service, Dan Ababei from Lighttwist Software, Netherlands and Assoc Prof Jonathan Keith from Monash University will deliver the keynote address.

Dr Bruce Marcot

Dr Marcot's research includes the assessment and modelling the of future climate change effects and other stressors on at-risk species, including the polar bear, northern spotted owl, Pacific walrus, and other high-latitude wildlife species. He is also developing and applying structured decision-aiding models and methods for informing listing decisions and threats evaluations of at-risk species and injurious invasive species; assessing causes and effects of sea level rise on coastal marshes; modelling the influence of alternative old-forest reserve designs on the viability of northern spotted owls; and developing new ways to bridge ecological and cultural values of subsistence resources used by indigenous peoples of southeast Alaska. A comprehensive summary of Dr Marcot's Bayesian Network research can be found on his personal website.

Dan Ababei

Dan Ababei is a freelance software developer and, as the owner of LightTwist Software, has been writing scientific software with a bias towards innovative dependence modelling and risk analysis tools. He has written code covering topics such as marginal distributions and their properties, multi-dimensional probability distributions, dependence structures (especially Bayesian networks, also vine copulae), uncertainty analysis and structured expert judgement. Dan has recently migrated, together with LightTwist Software, from the Netherlands to Australia where he is writing a wildfire regime risk management tool. More details on Dan's work along with Lighttwist software can be found here.

Assoc Prof Jonathan Keith

Assoc Prof Jonathan Keith works in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Monash University as a Senior Lecturer. He is a researcher in Bayesian methods, bioinformatics and genetic epidemiology. His current main research interest is in statistical methods for the detection of novel non-protein-coding functional elements in genomes. He also has current and recent projects in phylogenetics, whole genome association studies and identification of quantitative trait loci. He is currently a chief investigator on two ARC Discovery grants: Statistical methods for detection of non-coding RNAs in Eukaryote Genomes and Statistical methods for discovering RNAs contributing to human diseases and phenotypes. A detailed list of his work can be found on his profile.

Call for Abstracts and Participation

The organising committee for ABNMS 2015 is pleased to invite the submission of abstracts.

Abstracts are invited from all fields. Past presentations have covered a wide range of disciplines including environmental management, geology, law, ecology and medicine, and a variety of technical aspects on methods of development, data mining, linking GIS with Bayesian Networks, and lessons learned from particular BN projects.

Those beginning to use Bayesian networks are invited to present prospective projects for discussion.

Travel Grants

The Australasian Bayesian Network Modelling Society (ABNMS) is offering 4 travel grants to attend the ABNMS Tutorials and Conference 23-26 November 2015 Melbourne, Australia. Awards will be for $250 to $500 to contribute to the costs of travel to and from the conference.

Three Student Grants will be awarded and one 2015 Travel Grant for any person who attended the ABNMS pre-conference tutorials in 2014 in Rotorua, New Zealand and will present in 2015.

Applications should include a brief statement indicating the type of travel grant being applied for, justifying the application, an estimate of travel costs, a scanned signed statement from an academic supervisor verifying student status (if in application for one of the student travel grants), and a CV. An abstract of the talk to be presented at the conference must be submitted in parallel (see above). Student travel grants will only be awarded if the recipient registers for the conference and tutorials. Please note the 2015 Travel Grant recipient is not required to register for the pre-conference tutorials.

Travel grant applications must be submitted by email to president@abnms.org by 04 September 2015.

If you have any questions regarding ABNMS2015, please email ABNMS2015@abnms.org.
